Made in Kenya

Following our partnership with Artisan Fashion, we have launched an exclusive collection of totes handmade in Kenya, which will be available to purchase from our global flagship boutiques, from Spring 2025. The City Totes collection offers unique graphics, inspired by each city. For London, silhouettes of the British rose are layered over Vivienne’s hand-drawn tartan – two of the house’s favourite motifs, which have appeared regularly in Vivienne’s designs. The artwork is finished with the V&A graphic symbol, synonymous with Andreas and Vivienne’s union; Vivienne’s ‘Art Lovers Unite’ and ‘Get a Life’ slogans are accompanied with Andreas’ heart graphics for the Paris tote, reminiscent of the city of love and art; while the New York design features classic elements of house iconography – notably the ‘Tits’ graphic, recalling themes of creativity and freedom of expression; for Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Singapore, each tote is adorned with decorative floral or bird motifs, echoing the vibrant nature of these places - among other personalised designs for each of the 13 cities. Each original Vivienne Westwood graphic is also finished with the house’s signature orb motif, symbolising Vivienne’s vision of taking tradition into the future.

As part of the Made in Kenya project, this special collection introduces a new pigment, made from a minimum of 70% (depending on the recipe and intensity of the cooler) of pre- and post-consumer textiles, which have been reprocessed into a fine powder and used as a pigment dye. The powder pigments are used to create the ink paste for screen printing, which is the only available printing method in Kenya, carried out by hand. With the launch of our new collection of City Totes, this project marks the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with Recycrom, using a pigment produced by Officina39. With deep roots in Italian craftsmanship and creativity, the company provides innovative solutions for the apparel and denim industry, combining technical excellence with a forward-thinking approach. Since 2010, Vivienne Westwood has celebrated the work of thousands of micro-producers from African communities, in partnership with the Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) of the International Trade Centre and Artisan Fashion. The ‘Made in Kenya’ collections make up a significant part of the Vivienne Westwood DNA, featuring in global campaigns and seminal runway shows.

Our collectable City Totes will be available to purchase at each of our regional flagship boutiques, launching in Spring 2025. Further updates to be announced soon.
