The Tartan Clan

Over the years tartan has become synonymous with the Vivienne Westwood name, conjuring up images of vibrant plaid suits, classic tartan accessories, and Vivienne’s very own clan; the McAndreas.

Famed for her love of traditional British fabrics, Vivienne’s use of tartan in particular exploded onto the catwalk with the Autumn/Winter 1993/94 collection, Anglomania.

This iconic collection saw supermodels Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss hit the red-carpeted runway sporting one tartan creation after another.

The show in which Naomi famously toppled off her 10-inch blue mock-croc platforms (wearing a tartan kilt) and when the McAndreas tartan - named after Vivienne’s husband, Andreas Kronthaler - debuted, it was a celebration of the traditional checked fabric.

Since then, tartan has played an important role in Vivienne Westwood collections, and Vivienne is renowned for re-inventing the use of this traditional fabric, modernising it and making it feel current in every collection.

This season, our Red Label collection uses a classic woven red tartan on coats, trousers, skirts and dresses as well as on the popular ‘Love’ jacket.

The Anglomania collection champions a faded printed multi-colour check, while the MAN collection also features checks with the Morning Glory tartan being used to create a striking three-piece suit.

Over twenty years has passed since that 1993 Anglomania show, and the tartan appeal shows no signs of slowing down.
